‘Wire’d
wonders: Plastics to the core
When was the last time you used an electronic gadget without
a single component of plastic in it? Well, at least we cannot
think about any…Are you still thinking about it?
In today’s age, almost every electronic & electrical
appliance depends directly or indirectly on the use of at
least one component of plastic… be it even the simplest;
like in order to start an electric bulb, the cables supplying
electricity are insulated with plastics. In some cases, this
dependency on plastics is for safety of the operator, whereas
in others it could be for optimising efficiency of the appliance.
Different materials, different processes, different applications
and different demands – the only thing constant with
respect to the use of plastics in electric & electronics
is ‘the difference’. In this fast-changing and
fast-paced life where even a small inconvenience adds to stress,
plastics makes life easier in ways more than one. Nishan Chandran’s
article unravels these ‘wire’d wonders and the
next time you pick up your television’s remote to flip
channels, you would agree that in electronics is plastics
to the core.
